WITHOUT LOVE

If I speak with the tongues of angels and men
You'd not hear the words - they would die on the wind
Without Love

If I could move mountains and pull up the roots
I'd look down at my hands and say, "What's the use?"
Without love

You will find rudeness, boasting, and pride
And keeping a record of wrongs on the side
And you'll never lack for beams in your eyes
Without love

If I build my defenses, and straddle the walls
My world would collapse and the bulwarks would fall
Without love

The works of your hands you may bend, you may twist
But you'll lose your grip and go limp in the wrist
Without love

I can give all my money - get martyred in fire
It won't mean a thing - it would make me a liar
And please don't ask me to sing in a choir
Without love

When love is lost the stars cannot be held
And the branches of the tree will fight themselves
Without love

The mighty can't dance, nor the powerful sing
And you'll lose your path into God's endless spring
Without love

If I could speak with the tongues of angels and men
You'd not hear the words for the raging within -
The raging -
Without love

PAPER BOAT

If you're out sailing on the ocean
Crossing a river or a mote
You may find yourself in trouble
If you sail on a paper boat - can you float?

Up the ramp goes all your baggage
And anything that you can tote
They keep it safe down in the cargo
The warranty says it's gonna float

Open sky in all directions
Take off your many colored coat
The captain says he has connections
He would appreciate your vote

Blue sea flowing to the edge of the earth
They sent you pictures and a note
They said you should sail out there to it
In your little paper boat - can you float?

I have never seen a sparrow fall
And yet they're falling every day
I see them sitting on the statues
I see them flying away

I think you're living out your story
You know the words by rote
I don't wanna stand by and watch the ending
Send a flare from your paper boat
Can you float?

If you're out sailing on the ocean
Crossing a river or a mote
It may seem like the water's melting
You may have heard it in a quote

Out the window goes your baggage
And someone says "That's all she wrote"
I read about it in the paper - in the paper
People sailing on paper boats.

VERY LAST MITE

Something inside her - something so strong
Something past day and past night
Out of her poverty and the gold of her heart
She's giving one last mite

In all the years of the troubles and tears
She's never been able when push came to shove
But against all the logic and the needs of the moment
Caution is thrown to the wild winds of love
Something inside her something so strong
Something past day and past night

It's her very last mite - some thought it wrong
How could it be right?
But Jesus was warmed by the sight
Of her very last mite

3 years of roaming and searching each face
For a child w/ child-like hands
For just one who had come to the end of the race
And stalled in their own advance

Who knew all the pressures of food and of shelter
It's the losing of money that we're nervous of
But with nothing behind her and nothing before
It all disappeared into riches above
And caution was thrown to the wild winds of love
It's floating there still like a kite.

It's her very last mite - some thought it wrong
How could it be right?
But Jesus was warmed by the sight
Of her very last mite

Suddenly here was the one He had sought
To prove everyword He had spoken
This woman who drew Him out to center stage
To give up everything and be broken

Something inside her something so strong
That the coin was no longer held tight

It's her very last mite
Her fingers were loosened and her spirit took flight
It wasn't expected - it wasn't polite
To give the very last mite
Songs would be sung and the poets would write
How Jesus was warmed by the sight
Of her very last mite.

PRISONER OF HOPE

I cannot escape
I am bound with rope
No use squirming - no recourse
I'm a prisoner of hope

I try to crawl away
Some place where I can mope
But I get pulled back to the light
Right back into hope

Try to rescue me if you're able - if you dare
You might also try to make an anvil float
And there is no incantation you can use
On a prisoner of hope.

I lay things here and there
I misplace things a lot
But I'm glad there's one thing I can't lose
Cuz there's just one thing I've got

You think I'm not afraid
I'm quaking in my cloak
But despairing words you'll never hear
From a prisoner of hope.

Try to rescue me if you're able - if you dare
And you might as well ask dead men to vote
But it's useless to try and set this captive free -
This prisoner of hope.

Tragedy came near
And fear froze on my face
But hope stood calmly - never moved
Yet seemed so commonplace.

This world is not my home
And when life goes up in smoke
I'll still be a convict chained to love
A prisoner of hope.

You can try to rescue me if you're able - if you dare
You can try to tell the flowers not to grow
But when the jailer sets his mind to make you free
You're a prisoner of hope

No matter how far my hands may grope
My mind may careen down the slippery slope
I'm just a pilgrim under God's microscope -
A prisoner of hope.

ALL I CAN SEE

With the waves of this world around me
Perhaps it may seem a bit odd
In the dark abyss
Of a time like this
All I can see is God

With my feet carefully planted
So firmly on slippery sod
Every throw is a miss
In a time like this
But I'm reaching out for God
Cuz all I can see is God
All I can see
Is God

The people I meet say "Please tell us
Are you a rocker or a mod?"
But in time like this
I'd be remiss
If I wasn't looking at God

From ocean to ocean and farther
On every square foot that I've trod
In the vale of tears
Of my missing years
I've been reaching out for God
Cuz all I can see is God
All I can see
Is God

A daydream came to me
Can't say from where
I've gotta crawl out now
From under my chair
And fire off a flare
And stand in the glare
So all you can see is God
All you can see is God
All I can see
Is God

Don't try to creep past the minefield
Just call on the specialty squad
You'll have to stand still
Hey you know the drill
Keep reaching out for God

They want you to hide every wrinkle
Sneak around behind your facade
But days roll into nights
And they drop out of sight
And all you will have is God
All you will have is God
All I can see is God

When I look at the world
See the hand of God in all creation
It's all I can see
And when I look on the faces of the people
Made in the image of God
They're all I can see
All I can see..... all I can see

LOUSY FISHES

Sing a little song about every son and daughter -
Waitin' on the kingdom come
I'm sittin' in the river in 6 inches of water
But I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
Though it may tarry, brace for it
Every little secret's gonna have a face on it
Soon it's all been said and done.

The greatest dream I've had will fade away in a second
So I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
The clouds passing by
Will never know when I've been beckoned
So I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
Though it may tarry, speak to it
Be ready now and leap to it
Seemed like life had just begun.

Jesus said you serve him when you care for every little one
I'm pretty sure that's what I read
But all that I have got is just some lousy little fishes
And a loaf of week-old bread

Standing by to see my little fishes multiplying
Waitin' on the kingdom come
It's easy just to sit around and watch the world a'dying
While you're waiting for the kingdom come
While it may tarry, groan with it
Been so long since I got alone with it
Been so long since I've been stunned.

Sing a little song about every son and daughter
Waitin' on the kingdom come
My feet are tangled up and I'm straddling the border
But I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
Though it may tarry, brace for it
Clean your hands - make space for it
Hold them toward the setting sun
Hold them toward the setting sun

DUSTY ROAD

Dusty road came to my door
The way was long
My feet were sore
But you taught me what walkin's for
Dusty road, you taught me more.

Dusty road, I passed the time
Praying low to ease my mind
So many things I could not define
But the the breeze would blow
And ring my chime
You stretched as far as I could see,
Dusty road, for me,
Dusty road

I threw a rope around my dreams,
Pulled them in through the back door screen,
Scattered them across the kitchen floor,
Oh, but I now I find
I don't dream 'em anymore
I found the time
To sweep 'em back out the door.

Dusty road, let's count to ten
Take a deep breath, count back again
The sun is here - where has it been?
Dusty road, I know you can see
The rising glow you gave to me
I walked my life away for you,
Dusty road, for you
Dusty road -
Dusty road

I PICKED UP A STONE

I picked up a stone
I picked up a stone
I threw it as far as I could see
It was the same stone
Was the same stone
Someone on the road threw ahead to me
Someone on the road threw ahead to me

I called out a name
I called out a name
While groping my way like some refugee
It was the same name
Was the same name
Someone on the road had whispered to me
Someone on the road had whispered to me

My lips found a song
My lips found a song
The back of the wind was my harmony
It was the same song
Was the same song
The back of the wind taught me in a dream
The back of the wind taught me in a dream

I ran up a hill
I ran up a hill
The arc of the earth stretched out before me
It was the same hill
Was the same hill
It was the same air that Abraham breathed
It was the same air
It was the same song
It was the same name

So I picked up a stone
I picked up a stone
I threw it as far as I could see
It was the same stone
Was the same stone
Someone on the road threw ahead to me
Someone on the road threw ahead to me

DON'T GO SLEEPIN' IN THE BOAT

I gotta row this boat, Lord
Row it on the mighty sea
Waves up over my eyes, Lord
When you gonna see about me?

Don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
When you gonna see about me?
Don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
Hey now, people, stand amazed
What do you think I see?
There ain't nothin' movin' on the lake
But the Lord and me

If you won't meet me here, Lord
You got to meet me in the middle of the air
If the winds blow off my wings, Lord
You gotta meet me with another pair

But don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
Don't be an absentee
Wake up from your rest, Lord
Hey now, people, stand amazed
Makes me want to slap my knee
There ain't nothin' movin' on the lake
But the Lord and me

I gotta row this boat, Lord
But the waves are way too big
Clean up over my head, Lord
Feel like I'm in a whirly-gig

So don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
No time to count to three
Wake up from your rest, Lord
Hey now, people, stand amazed
I'm sure you will agree
There ain't nothin' movin'
Nothin' movin'
Nothin' movin' on the lake
But the Lord and me

Nothin movin' - nothin' at all
Nothin' movin' - don't have to take a fall
Nothin' movin'

IF YOU EVER FIND ME

If stars could fall
I'd catch them all and pray
That northern lights
Could turn the brightness gray

My eyes would not be blinded
And everything I touched I then could see
And you'll never have to say a word
If ever you find me

If stars could cry
I'd send the skies away
How could it know
That tears could show the way?

My arms would not be aching
And nothing that I held would ever flee
And you'll never have to hold me back
If ever you find me

If ever you find me
Behind the castle wall
Then you must remind me
Of everything
Or anything at all

If stars could dream
They would not seem to fade
You'd see no blur
But as they were first made

My sleep would not be broken
Unless I heard the waves upon the sea
And you'll never have to call my name
If ever you find me

THE END OF THE DREAM

Well, I got to the end of the dream last night
I got to the end of the dream
I never knew it was recurring
That's not ever the way that it seemed

I could never describe all the images
They fade at the edge of my sight
But I finally saw them all clearly
At the end of the dream last night
The end of the dream last night

Other times I was waking too early
And it left me just groping for air
And I yearned for the time when the outcome
Wouldn't melt in the dawn's early glare

The pilgrims were roaming the highway
And the plowman was steering his plow
I could tell by the faces turned toward me
That the end of the dream was now
The end of the dream was now

I silently sat on a hillside
And a breeze settled in
Though the ending seemed nearer
Than ever before
A voice said, "It only begins."

A ring on a finger stretched toward me
Was a match for the one that I wore
And a deepening glow fell around about me
Like a light from an opening door
A light from an opening door

I silently sat on a hillside
And the air seemed to grow
Though I found that my soul was surprised by the joy
A voice said, "It's ever been so"

Well I've thought back upon it for most of the day
And the air has grown larger it seems
I'd been numb from the chill of a wounded heart
And faith had been losing its gleam

But the doves were released from their cages
And the eyes of the blind touched the light
And the keeper of dreams would not let me awake
'Til the end of the dream last night
The end of the dream last night
'Twas the end of the dream last night
Last night
